So it really pays to add the art and engineering components together for a lot of kids. A good example would be that we did a robotic zoo class this summer where students learned the building and programming of robots, but then they also came up with an animal, an entire profile on an animal, made the exhibit at the zoo, so that the robot was an animal. The arts make hard sciences and the other STEM activities easier to learn, so we integrate them. We also offer that in a weeklong format, and some advanced video classes for the kids.ĮTN: Why do you add the "A" (for arts) in the traditional acronym STEM, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math?ĪS: A lot of us do this in the arts community. In one day, the kids will come up with a plot, write the script for the movie, build their costumes and props, film the video and edit it. We do the green-screen film class in the summer, which is one of my favorite classes.
